Notarial Acts I'm Authorized to Perform
The same seven acts apply whether performed electronically/remotely or in person - RON just changes the method, not which acts are allowed.

Oaths and affirmations
Jurats
You certify that someone appeared before you and voluntarily signed a document, understanding what it was.
Administering a sworn or affirmed statement that something is true.
A signer swears or affirms to the truthfulness of a document's contents and signs it in front of you (combines the oath with the signature).
Affidavits/depositions
Certifying a written statement or testimony given under oath.
Copy certifications
Comparing an original to a photocopy and certifying it's a complete, true, and exact reproduction.
Verification of fact
Confirming identity details, authorization, or status against public records (e.g., corporate standing, date of birth).
Loan Signing
Mainly Acknowledgments and Jurats.
What I Cannot Notarize
- Certified copies of vital records (birth, death, or marriage certificates) - these must come directly from the Virginia Department of Health Division of Vital Records.
- Certified copies of court documents - these must come directly from the issuing court clerk.
- Marriage ceremonies - Virginia notaries are not authorized to perform them.
- Hybrid certificates that mix acknowledgment and jurat language on a single certificate.
- My own signature, a spouse's signature, or any document in which I have a direct financial interest.
- Legal advice, including selecting which notarial certificate a document requires.
- Any signature where the signer is not physically present and properly verified through approved remote online notarization (RON).
- Pre-dated or back-dated notarial acts.
- Incomplete notarial certificates, or certificates missing proper wording on the signature page.
